Dog Days

Are there any of you out there who don't know that pets are not my thing? And yet, right now, I find myself living in a house with one nocturnal mouse named Algernon and one ill-behaved dog named Schatzie. Algernon sleeps all day and runs on her wheel all night. It makes a noise like a cup of tea bubbling over. Schatzie makes a lot of noise, steals breakfasts, chews up toys, and runs out front door any time she can. She is still a sweetie for all that. Go figure. We just spent half an hour trying to coax Schatzie out of a reclusive neighbor's back yard. This is a house where we think one person lives, but we have never seen them. Their house is sort of the haunted house of the neighborhood, dilapidated, overgrown, windows always closed and curtained, and there were Joe and I standing in the driveway with a tempting bowl of kibble, daring each other to go up and knock so that we can ask to go into the backyard and retrieve the dog. Sophie helped by shouting "Bad dog!" periodically and telling us maybe we should look in New York or San Diego. Anyway, Schatzie eventually came out covered in burrs and thorny bits which we duly combed out and cut out. Algernon simply rolls his eyes at all this. He's been with us for 12 weeks now and has seen it all. He's a world-weary mouse, having been rescued from the parking lot of a high school. Who wouldn't be world weary after that?

So, when I started this, I did state that I couldn't promise anything terribly interesting, and so I have proven myself right.

Oh, two more movie reviews...we saw Oceans 13 yesterday and enjoyed it very much. Funny and light-hearted and goofy. Lots of in-jokes between the actors, but they have so much fun together it is fun to watch them. And who can't enjoy watching George Clooney. Oolala. And...we watched Ghost Rider last night. It was about two hours long and I thought it was 97 minutes too long. Joe liked it though, and thought it honored the Marvel comic pretty well. Not for the kids though. Yikes! Lots of ghosts and melting people.

And that's it for now. Oh here is a question you can answer for a small prize:
To what short story does Algernon's name refer? (Hint: he was named by high school students.) First one to answer wins.

You have another dog now?? She's so cute!

I will refrain from answering the quiz question to give the high schoolers a fair chance.
